(CNN) - NASA announced it has beamed an image of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa to the moon through a laser.

The digitized picture reached a satellite orbiting the moon.

The space agency says the experiment is a first in using lasers to communicate at interplanetary distances instead of radio waves.

By using lasers, NASA says it's on the verge of revolutionizing the way data is delivered across the solar system.
