ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - The Coast Guard is dispatching buoy tenders to reset buoys to widen the Mississippi River channel beyond a 300 foot width along between St. Louis, Missouri and Cairo, Illinois.

Due to recent precipitation, the Mississippi River has risen by five feel across the area.

Towboat operators will be allowed to safely push larger and deeper draft barges. This is the first time since November the channel has been widened.

The widening will take around 10 days.
