(CNN) - He's one of the richest people in America, and Mark Zuckerberg is also one of the most generous.
The Facebook founder and CEO was the second-biggest charitable donor in the U.S. last year, behind Warren Buffett, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy's annual list.
Zuckerberg, along with wife Priscilla Chan, gave roughly half a billion dollars to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. The organization issues grants for a host of causes in the San Francisco area.
Zuckerberg made his first big philanthropy splash in 2010, when he pledged $100 million to public schools in Newark, New Jersey.
He was one of three tech-industry titans in the top five most generous donors. Centaurus Energy Hedge fund founder John Arnold, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and Google co-founder Sergey Brin also made the list.
