LEBANON, Ill. (KSDK) - The driver of a pickup truck has been airlifted to a St. Louis hospital after crashing into the side of a tanker truck near Lebanon, Illinois, Monday night.
The crash happened just after 11 p.m. in the 10,000 block of U.S. Highway 50.
Illinois State Police say the driver of the semi was backing into a private driveway, when another car swerved to miss the truck, and hit a mailbox. That driver fled after the collision.
After the driver of the semi got out to check on that crash, police say a pickup truck slammed into the side of the tanker.
The front of the truck wedged under the side of the semi. The driver was trapped for almost two hours before being extricated and taken by helicopter to St. Louis University Hospital. His injuries are described as serious but not life-threatening. A passenger in the pickup truck suffered minor injuries.
Investigators tell NewsChannel 5's Steve Patterson they have no reason to believe the pickup driver was impaired.
