GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KSDK) - Authorities are on the scene of an explosion in Granite City, Illinois.

The explosion happened in the cleaning and finishing department at Amsted Rail around 8:15 a.m. Thursday. The company is located at Niedringhaus Avenue and Walnut Street.

NewsChannel 5's Dana Dean spoke with a mother who says firefighters told her that her 42-year-old son was involved in the explosion, and says he was thrown against a wall and transported to Saint Louis University Hospital to be treated for a broken leg.

Amsted Steel was formerly known as American Rail. The company makes side rails and bolsters that hold wheels on railroad cars.

Dana Dean says she saw one person leaving the building, covered in soot, and being help by two other people.

Another person walked out of the building unassisted, but then got into an ambulance for treatment.

A Gateway Regional Medical spokesperson says they initially received a total ofnine patients from Amsted rail.Two of those patients were then airlifted from Gateway to Mercy in Creve Coeur, Missouriin critical condition.

The seven patients that stayed at Gateway are being treated for smoke inhalation, and are said to be suffering from non-life threatening injuries. Three of those patients were released a short time later.

Amsted Rail held a news conference Thursday morning and stated they are still contacting family members of victims and will not release details about who was injured and to what extent until families are notified.

Everyone at Amsted Rail is being sent home for the day.
