MAPLEWOOD, Mo. (KSDK) - Maplewood police are searching for a truck thief after he took the vehicle's rightful owner on a wild ride.

According to Maplewood Police Chief Stephen Kruse, the incident occurred Thursday at 12:20 p.m. in the parking lot at the Maplewood Commons shopping center.

The vehicle owner was leaving a business at the shopping center when he noticed somebody driving off with his truck. The owner chased after the truck and jumped into the bed of the vehicle as the suspect circled the parking lot.

The suspect drove north on Hanley Road and got on Interstate 64 heading east, Kruse said.

The truck owner smashed the rear windshield and attempted to get the thief to pull over. The suspect eventually pulled onto the shoulder, got into a fight with the truck owner, then drove off again.

Kruse said the truck owner was treated for minor injuries.

Police described the suspect as a light skinned African-American man, approximately 22 years of age, standing 5'7" or 5'8" and weighing about 140-150 pounds, with short dark hair in braids and no facial hair. He was last seen wearing a black t-shirt and blue jeans.

The stolen truck is a maroon 1992 GMC Sierra extended cab with Missouri plate 1HN375. The hood of the truck is darker than the rest of the vehicle. The rear sliding glass window is broken out.

Anyone with information on the vehicle or suspect's whereabouts is asked to contact the Maplewood Police Department at 314-645-3000 or the Maplewood Detective Bureau at 314-646-3621. The anonymous tip line is 314-781-3733.
