(KSDK Sports) - The SLU Billikens are heading on to the A-10 Semi Finals after their win today over Charlotte. Today, Frank Cusumano presented a commentary about the man leading the team.

Right before the season was going to start last year, rick Majerus lost one of his top assistants, Al Jennsen. He had already lost his top assistant Porter Moshier the previous spring. He needed a big time coach. He called his old friend, Jim Crews, who had stopped coaching in 2009 after 7 years at Army.

Majerus said I need your help. Majerus said "come coach with me for this season and I will pay for your lodging at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel." Crews, who was living in Indiana, took the offer. He spent a lot of long hours with his friend- dreaming and scheming for SLU success. The Billikens made it to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

And it was after that final loss to Michigan State, Majerus pulled the staff into a little room and he said what Tom Hanks said in Apollo 13; '''Gentleman it's been a privilege to serve with you."

Crews knew Majerus wasn't coming back. Crews was named the interim coach in the summer and Majerus died in December.

What has Crews done? He has turned in the finest coaching job in America. There are 347 division 1 coaches in this country. And the Sporting News just named Jim Crews the National Coach of the Year. In his 25th year of coaching, in his 59th year of living, he's at the top of his profession.

Perspective- he learned some of it on the day he was let go at west point, and he went to tell his
son who is a priest, of how he was fired.
