Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Alex Young tallied 18 points as the fourth- seeded UC Irvine Anteaters upset the top-seeded Long Beach State 49ers, 67-60, in the semifinals of the Big West Conference Tournament at the Honda Center.
Will Davis II added 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocks for UC Irvine (20-14), which will face the winner of the Pacific and Cal Poly matchup for the championship. Chris McNealy chipped in 13 points while Daman Starring tallied seven points, seven assists and three steals.
Tony Freeland and Keala King scored 15 points each for LBSU (19-13), which failed to defend its crown. Mike Caffey contributed 14 points and nine boards while James Ennis went 4-of-9 from the floor to net 11 points.
Neither side could find their touch in the early going as UC Irvine shot 38.7 percent from the field in the first half while it limited the 49ers to just 36.7 percent efficiency from the floor. Despite going just 2-of-10 from beyond the arc, the Anteaters took a 29-28 lead into the intermission.
LBSU heated up to hit on 46.7 percent of its field goal attempts in the second half, but the Anteaters extended their lead and pulled off the upset by converting 10-of-11 at the free-throw line.
Despite the loss, LBSU enjoyed a 40-28 edge in the rebounding battle.
