New York, NY (Sports Network) - Philadelphia Union forward Jack McInerney was named the Player of the Week on Monday for Week 8 of the 2013 Major League Soccer campaign.
McInerney scored a pair of goals in the first half on Sunday, leading Philadelphia to a 3-2 victory over Eastern Conference rivals D.C. United at RFK Stadium.
McInerney opened up the scoring in seventh minute when Conor Casey played a through ball to McInerney, who settled it, split his defenders and struck a left-footed shot from the center of the box into the bottom right corner.
The 20-year-old striker found what turned out to be the match winner in the 26th minute as a long throw-in from right back Sheanon Williams settled on the left boot of McInerney in the United penalty area and he smashed it past D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid for his league-leading sixth goal of the season.
The MLS Player of the Week award is selected each week by the North American Soccer Reporters. The group consists of members of online, print, television, and radio media.
