VILLAGE OF MANCHESTER, Ill. (KSDK) - Authorities have identified a mansuspected of killing five people and injuring another in a mass shooting Wednesday morning in the Village of Manchester.

The suspected shooter, 43-year-old Rick O'Dell Smith, died later that morning following a shootout with authorities.

The murders happened inside a public housing complex on East Street around 4:30 a.m., according to ISP Trooper Mike Kindhart.

Thefive deceased victims were located in the residence: two pairs of victims were in separate bedrooms, and the fifth victim was found in the hallway. The age of the victims ranges from infant to adult. They have not been identified, but authorities said they were all related.

The victims were all killed with a shotgun at close range, according to ISP Lt. Col. Todd Kilby.

Investigators said witnesses told themSmith took the sixth shooting victim, a six-year-old girl, and handed her over to a neighbor. Thegirl was rushed to a local hospital and remains in critical condition.

Police located Rick O'Dell Smith shortly before 7:15 a.m. in a vehicle. Smith exchanged gunfire with Illinois State Police and Winchester police at approximately 7:27 a.m. before being taken into custody. He was taken to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead at 10:10 a.m.

Investigators have not disclosed a possible motive.
