SMITHTON, Ill (KSDK) - Police in Smithton, Illinois, say a strange turn of events led to the death of a bicyclist early Tuesday as he was riding his motorized bike to work.
39 year-old John Fudge of Belleville was riding the bike on Douglas Road at Route 159 when he fell onto the road and was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
The incident happened around 5:30 a.m.
Smithon Police Chief Brian Vielweber tells NewsChannel 5 Fudge was lying in the eastbound lane of Douglas Road. Two passer-by's stopper to assist him. But before they were able to get him off the road, a third vehicle approached and struck Fudge.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Smithton Police department is heading up the investigation and has found no criminal negligence on the part of the driver who struck the victim. No charges are expected.
Vielweber says Fudge recently began riding the bike to his job 15 miles away in Millstadt as a way to spend less money on gasoline.
