UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. (KSDK) - He broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball, and on Tuesday, Jackie Robinson's daughter, Sharon, presented awards to two local students who won a national essay contest about breaking barriers.

She handed out the awards at Jackson Park Elementary in University City.

Fourth grader Xavier-Morgan Gillard won first prize for his essay on overcoming selective mutism, a rare anxiety disorder.

Parkway Central ninth grader Jennifer Wayland won the grand prize for sharing her struggles with body image.

Both students were also honored during a pre-game ceremony at Busch Stadium Tuesday night.
