CLAYTON, Mo. (KSDK) - Dominic Bertani has been in the business of making people feel beautiful for more than 30 years, so he's had a hand in many makeovers.
"We see 3,000 clients a month," said Bertani, owner of Dominic Michael Salon.
And although everyone who walks into his salon is special, the job in front of the team at Dominic Michael Salon is particularly significant.
"She had never been to a salon before," Bertani said.
Not because Rachelle Lee had never stepped into a salon, but because of what she's stepping out of.
"I started smoking marijuana on a daily basis when I was ten," Lee explained.
She spent her youth in 32 foster homes doing any and all drugs.
"I knew I had a problem I just couldn't stop," Lee added.
But with help from counselors at Bridgeway Behavioral Health she's on the road to recovery.
"My clean date is March 13th," Lee said proudly.
Of course, facing your demons sometimes makes it hard to look in the mirror and that's what makes what the salon is doing extra special.
"I'm a firm believer in if you look good, you feel good and wow you guys have made me feel good today," Lee said, starting to cry.
For the next year every women who completes the program at Bridgeway will get a few special touches free of charge, but this isn't about glamour.
"This is about self-esteem and self-confidence. There's a lot of things impacted by recovery so if we can help them feel better about themselves that's a big plus," Bertani said.
Actually at the end of this appointment, it's hard to tell who feels better reminding the rest of us about the beauty of giving back.
"Oh my gosh, I feel like a million bucks," Lee said with a smile.
