ALTON, Ill (KSDK) - A vessel strucka fleeting area near Alton, causing barges to break away and oil to spill into the Mississippi River.

The U.S. Coast Guard said it happend at 12:57 a.m. Friday. Fourteen barges, two dry docks and two workplats broke away. It also caused 300 gallons of crude oil to spill into the river.

The Captain of the Port closed the river from mile marker 194 to 198 after the accident. All barges, flts and dry-dockswere secured and the river reopened at 2:13 a.m.

The Coast Guard is at the scene inspecting facilites and barges and conducing a shoreline assessment to evaulate any possible environmental damage.
