OKAWVILLE, Ill. (KSDK) - A Fayatteville, Indiana man was arrested for allegedly robbing a Washington County bank Wednesday.

According to Chief Deputy John Kennedy of the Okawville Police Department, the robbery occurred at First National Bank just after the bank opened. The suspect ran out with an undisclosed amount of cash.

"At this time, I had not been told there was a bank robbery," Chief Stephen Millikin said. "It just looked wrong. A person with a hood and mask on to run out of your bank carrying money in the middle of the day first as it opened at 8:30 in the morning, that's not right."

The Okawville police chief happened to be pulling up to the post office across the street when the suspect ran out of the bank. The chief followed the suspect to the getaway car, at which point the suspect drove off.

The chief pursued the suspect vehicle through town and onto eastbound Interstate 64, Kennedy said. The suspect got out of his vehicle at mile marker 43 and ran into the median, but the chief eventually caught and arrested him.

The suspect was identified as 33-year-old Michael Dawson.

Millikin says timing is everything. If he had been in the post office, he wouldn't have seen the robber leave the bank and wouldn't have caught him as quickly.
