BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KSDK) - A 31-year-old Washington Park, Ill. man has been charged with one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking and one count of fleeing and eluding police.

Belleville police were called to the 9600 block of West Main Street in Belleville around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a carjacking. The victim told officers he had pulled onto the parking lot of Circle K to use his cell phone when a man entered his vehicle and showed a handgun.

The suspect ordered the victim to drive to various locations throughout the city. The victim was able to exit the vehicle at some point and the suspect fled in the vehicle. The victim was then able to call police.

A Belleville police officer spotted the stolen vehicle on Illinois Route 15, just west of Illinois Route 157 and attempted to stop the suspect. The suspect led police on a pursuit westbound into East St. Louis and ended when the suspect fled into a wooded area near 19th and Caseyville Avenue.

The suspect, identified as Timothy L. Allen, was taken into custody near the abandoned vehicle.

Allen is currently on parole for a similar crime committed in Swansea in 2009.

Bond is set at $750,000.
