MADISON COUNTY, Ill. (KSDK) - One person is in custody for allegedly burglarizing a home while pretending to be an Ameren employee.
Deputies with the Madison County Sheriff's Office were called to the 7500 block of Humbert Road in Godfrey, Ill. shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 4. The homeowner told deputies a man knocked on her front door, identifying himself as an Ameren employee. He told her he was there to check her gas meter to ensure her billing was correct.
The woman says she took the man to her outside gas meter where the man inspected it before leaving. The woman then noticed a second person sitting in the suspect's dark-colored passenger car. The woman thought that was strange, so she asked the suspect for identification proving he was an Ameren employee.
The suspect was unable to provide identification.
When the woman came back inside her home she noticed her purse had been stolen, along with other property.
Daniel A. Mitchell, 25, of Caseyville, Ill. is charged with residential burglary. Police believe he is the first suspect who told the homeowner he was an Ameren employee. He was also sought for similar activity in St. Charles, Mo.
U.S. Marshals took Mitchell into custody at a Washington Park business in the early morning hours of June 7.
Bond is set at $75,000.
Police are still attempting to identify the second suspect. Anyone with information regarding the identity of the second suspect or information related to other similar crimes should contact the Madison County Sheriff's main dispatch line at 618-692-4433, the investigation line at 618-692-0871, or the anonymous tip line at 618-296-3000.
