ST. LOUIS(KSDK) - An Illinois congressman is offering a compromise on the name of the new Mississippi River bridge that includes both a nod to Stan Musial, and military veterans.

Congressman Rodney Davis (R-IL-13) has introduced a bill to name the bridge carrying I-70 across the Mississippi River the "Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge."

This could offer a solution to state lawmakers who have been at odds over the name of the new bridge.

Missouri lawmakers have voted to name the bridge after St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Famer Stan Musial. The bill also includes naming the Missouri approach to the bridge after construction worker Andy Gammon, who was killed while working on the project.

However, Illinois lawmakers have voted to name the bridge the "Veterans Memorial Bridge."

The proposal from Rep. Davis would seem to "bridge" the gap between the two states.

Musial is a Navy veteran who served his country during World War II.

All four U.S. Senators from Missouri and Illinois support naming the bridge after Musial.

The bridge is expected to be complete sometime in 2014.
