CENTREVILLE, Ill. (KSDK) - Four St. Clair County Jail inmates face charges after correctional division supervisors busted an escape plot.
St. Clair County Sheriff Richard Watson said officers started conducting surveillance of the suspects after hearing rumors about an escape plot.
Correctional officers found a damaged mop and broom handles, so Captain Thomas Trice ordered a surprise search of the suspected inmates' cells. They found a five to seven inch diameter hole in the ceiling of one of the housing units.
Captain Trice ordered all the inmates be put in individual cells and placed in red jumpsuits that identify them as extreme escape risk.
The captain said all four inmates were charged with attempted escape. The suspects are 19-year-old Deangelo Wiley of Centreville, 19-year-old Devin Warren of Madison, 34-year-old Daniel Brown of Temple, Pennsylvania and 27-year-old Joshua Baker of Central Point, Oregon.
Prior tohis new charges, Warren was being held for unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful distribution of a look-a-like substance.
Wiley was being held for murder.
Brown was being held on felony counts of manufacturing meth, unlawful possession of meth, aggravated unlawful use of weapon and child endangerment charges. He also has felony charges pending in Pennsylvania.
Baker was being held for unlawful use of a weapon, but pleaded guilty to those charges on June 17. Baker is also facing felony charges in Pennsylvania.
