(KSDK Sports) -- The Blues made a move today, but not the one you might expect having the free agency period in the NHL begin this morning.

Today, the Blues made a trade, sending defenseman Kris Russell and hisjust signed, one-year contract, to Calgary in exchange for the Flames' fifth round draft choice in 2014.

Russell, 26, played in 33 games with the Blues last season, registering seven points (one goal, six assists) along with nine penalty minutes. The 5-10, 173-pound defenseman has played in 364 National Hockey League (NHL) games over six seasons, amassing 95 points (23 goals, 72 assists) and 145 penalty minutes.

The Caroline, Alberta native was acquired by the Blues in exchange for Nikita Nikitin on Nov. 11, 2011 and was originally drafted by Columbus in the third round, 67th overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
