ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KSDK) -- A mattress on the highway is being blamed foran accident that closed the eastbound lanes of Interstate44 at Vandeventer for almost 6 hours Saturday.
The crash involved a mid-size pickup truck, a St. Louis city police transport van, and a semi truck.
Police say officers were helping remove the mattress from the highway whenthe pickup truck slammed into the police van.
The pickup truck, apparently went up in flames after the impact, killing the driver.
Theback of the police van and the front of a semi truck were damaged.The accident occuredaround 10:30a.m. near the Grand Avenueexit.
The highway was shut down east of Vandeventer until 4:00p.m.
The victim was pronounced dead on scene and has not been identified.
There were no other injuries.
