ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - A man suspected of robbing a Clayton bank late last month was found dead in a St. Louis hotel room, the Clayton Police Department said Monday.
According to a police spokesperson, the Fifth Third Bank was robbed on Monday, July 29. The suspect approached a teller, produced a demand note, and left with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Witnesses at the scene helped police identify the suspect as Joseph Medearis.
Medearis was previously convicted in the 2001 robbery of Commerce Bank at Clayton Road and Demun Avenue. He was sentenced to 10 years on that conviction.
On July 30, Medearis was found dead in a hotel room in St. Louis City from an apparent suicide. The medical examiner has not determined an official cause of death.
NewsChannel 5 typically does not report on suicides. However, the person in this case had been wanted in a crime and police were searching for him.
