(KSDK Sports) -- Cardinals top prospect, Oscar Taveras will have season ending surgery, ending any speculation that he will appear in a Cardinals uniform sometime this season. This information was first reported by Jenifer Langosch of

According to reports out of Memphis, Taveras has been listed day-to-day with a high ankle sprain suffered back May. Taveras has played in just one game since June 23because he was trying to rehab the injury and avoid surgery.

Taverashit .310/.348/.471 with five home runs and five stolen bases for AAA Memphis. Lastseason he hit .321/.380/.572 with 23 homers and 10 steals in 124 gamesfor Double-A Springfield after skipping over High Class-A completely.

Baseball America ranked Taveras as the third best prospect in baseball before the season and the second best in their midseason updatelast month.

Langosch reports Taveras will be back in time for Spring Training next season.
