(KSDK Sports) -- The momentum earned after Tuesday's 14 inning comeback win was quickly washed washed away Wednesday, but today is another day.
The Cardinals can get back to within two games of first place Pittsburgh by taking the rubber game of the three game series this afternoon at Busch. First pitch at 12:45 p.m.
Matt Carpenter, Carlos Beltran, Matt Holliday, and Jon Jay all had hits as the Cardinals scored one run on four hits. Starting pitcher Shelby Miller has allowed eight hits and five runs while striking out striking out five over 6.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 11-8 on the season.
For Thursday's game the Cardinals start Lance Lynn who lost last time out who always seems to get some run support. For the season Lynn has allowed 127 hits and 63 earned runs while striking out 145 over 149.2 innings for a 13-6 record and a 3.79 ERA.
The Pittsburgh Pirates refuse to go away as they took down the Cardinals on Wednesday. Andrew McCutchen and Neil Walked had two hits each and Pedro Alvarez and Garrett Jones each had home runs as the Pirates scored five runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Francisco Liriano allowed four hits and a run while striking out six over a full nine innings to get the win and go to 13-5 on the year.
For Thursday's game the Pirates start A.J. Burnett who has the lowest ERA of his career. For the season Burnett has allowed 114 hits and 44 earned runs while striking out 149 over 134.1 innings for a 5-8 record and a 2.95 ERA.
The Cardinals are13-7 in their last 20 home games and 12-4 in Lynn's last 16 starts. Pittsburgh is 7-2 in their last nine games, 6-2 against a team with a winning record, and 4-11 in Burnett's last 15 starts
Lynn seems to get support while Burnett always seems to have no support mixed with tough luck but the Cardinals have been awful of late and the Pirates seem to have their number.
