ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - City police revealed Thursday that more than 100 firearms have been stolen from cars this year alone - that's about three guns stolen from cars in St. Louis per week. It's a 2 percent increase over last year.

While Police Chief Sam Dotson said the department is trying to combat the uptick in break-ins, he also recommends that gun owners be careful.

"I've said many times that I do not want a legal gun to become an illegal gun," Dotson said. "And, the concealed carry law does not allow you to take a gun into a sporting event with more than 5,000 people. That immediately disqualifies the baseball game, immediately disqualifies the football game. So don't even bring your gun downtown.

"When you see many cars in a row and nothing is taken, we believe they're looking for guns."

Overall, Dotson said there has been a 6 percent decrease in violent crime in St. Louis.
