ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. (KSDK) - A St. Charles County woman is badly bruised and says she is bewildered after her neighbor attacked her with a baseball bat.

It happened just outside of Wentzville on the 1900 block of Diehr Road. Denise Howell says she's lived in this home for 14 years with no problems, until about a year and a half ago when 31-year-old Jennifer Shuttleworth moved in next door.

Howell says Shuttleworth has threatened her, her husband, and their children amongst many other ongoing disputes. And the Howells say they thought a fence would help. But police say while Howell was repairing the fence this past Friday, Shuttleworth attacked her with an aluminum bat for standing on her side of the fence.

The prosecutor says Howell was within her rights and charged Shuttleworth with felony assault.

"I couldn't believe it was happening. I was just in shock," said Howell. "After a couple swings and I felt the impact then I realized, 'Oh, my god, she's trying to kill me I have to defend myself,'" recalled Howell, who was taken to the hospital for cuts and deep bruises. She says she is also worried about the loss of feeling in her hand.

"We kind of hope, because of what we've gone through right now, the law is going to finally figure out this isn't just disturbance calls being made," said Denise's husband, Dan Howell, of the numerous times he says the couple has called authorities looking for help dealing with their neighbor.

"Something needs to be done, he said.

Shuttleworth is in jail on a $30,000 cash-only bond.
