ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Metro transit users will need to start double checking their change before boarding the bus.

Starting Oct. 14, the buses will no longer accept pennies, 50-cent coins or $2 bills as payment for fare.

Metro will replace its 20-year-old fareboxes and will require exact change or a valid Metro pass or ticket, according to a company press release.

The boxes will continue to accept $1, $5, $10 and $20 bills as well as nickels, dimes, quarters and dollar coins for payment.

The new technology of the fareboxes will help in identifying counterfeit bills and foreign coins.
