COLUMBIA, Mo. (KSDK) - The Missouri Tigers' red shirt freshman quarterback and a starting defensive end were the recipients of SEC weekly awards following the team's 36-17 victory over the Florida Gators.
Quarterback Maty Mauk was named Southeastern Conference Freshman Player of the Week, while Michael Sam won Defensive Player of the Week.
Mauk, who made his first collegiate start for injured starter James Franklin, befuddled the Gators defense, throwing for 295 yards and a touchdown and rushing for a second score. Mauk is the only quarterback this season to throw for more than 164 yards against the Gators.
Michael Sam recorded three sacks against the Gators for a combined loss of 22 yards, as well as four tackles. Sam leads the SEC in sacks (9 total) and tackles for a loss (13 total); he ranks second and fourth, respectively, in those categories across the nation.
