ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KSDK) - Monsanto Company will begin construction this summer on a $400 million expansion project at its Chesterfield Village Research Center.
Monsanto's expansion calls for 36 new greenhouses, additional office and lab space, as well as plant growth chambers. Those greenhouses and growth chambers help Monsanto simulate different climates to aid in research for best performing seeds.
Approximately 1,000 people work at the 1.5-million-square-feet Chesterfield site, which includes 250 laboratories, 122 plant growth chambers and two acres of greenhouses. Employment is expected to double by the time expansion is completed, according to a Monsanto spokeswoman.
Construction is expected to be finished in 2017. In the meantime, commercial and corporate teams will remain at Monsanto's Creve Coeur location. Those teams will begin moving into the Chesterfield site in phases. The lab spaces at the Creve Coeur location will be converted to other uses once the employee transfer is complete.
