ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Adding some romance and spice to your life could help prevent heart disease.

A recent study by the University of Arizona shows divorced people are at 23 percent greater risk of early death than married people. Doctors say loneliness decreases the chances of depression and anxiety.

Having an active sex life can also do wonders for your heart.

"The more frequently you have sexual activity, the healthier is your immune system, which will put you at lower risk for infection and inflammation, both of those have been tied to the development of vascular disease," said psychologist Dr. Gregory Jones.

As far as people who've already suffered a heart attack or stroke, the American Heart Association says it is safe for most patients to resume sexual activity, but you should consult your cardiologist first.
