ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - A younggirl was shot in south St. Louis Thursday evening.

Police say a 4-year-old girl was with her mother walking up the steps to a home in the 4700 block of Louisiana when a man driving by fired a shot, striking the girl in the shoulder.

The girl was not the intended target. Police believe the suspect may be a man who was seen arguing with his girlfriend in the area earlier in the day.

The mother started to drive her daughter to the hospital, but stopped when she saw a police cruiser at Itaska and Louisiana. The mother flagged down the officer, who put the girl in the back of the patrol car and drove her to Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center.

She was released from the hospital Friday afternoon.

Police are now looking for the man who fired the shot.
