KSDK - Some of the biggest names in country music will headline a benefit concert for a Highland, Ill. soldier killed in Afghanistan.
It's a concert designed to honor the legacy of Sergeant First Class Gary Vasquez, who died serving his country in Operation Enduring Freedom in 2008.
"Well Hungarians", named country group of the year in 2006, will play at the Madison County Fairgrounds Exposition Hall in Highland, Illinois on Friday night.
In addition to his role as a devoted husband and brother, Vasquez was passionate about musical theater and the performing arts. Vasquez performed in several theatrical productions at Highland High School and later graduated from Illinois State University with a Fine Arts degree in 1996.
The Gary J. Vasquez Memorial Scholarship will be presented to a Highland High School senior who chooses to pursue a degree in the arts.
Tickets to Friday's benefit concert are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. A cash bar will have beer, wine, and mixed drinks.
The doors open at 6:30 pm, the "Well Hungarians" are scheduled to play sometime between 8 pm and midnight.
