ST. LOUIS (KSDK) – Special operations officers with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department responded to the area of Union and Ridge in north St. Louis Friday afternoon after receiving a report of a man armed with a TEC-9 gun.
Police found the suspect, and when they approached him, officers say he "clutched his side," as if he was trying to conceal something underneath his clothing.
Homicide Capt. Michael Sack says the suspect fled west and ran behind a market, turned north through an alley, and became trapped at a chain fence protecting an auto repair business.
According to Capt. Sack, the suspect crouched behind a tow truck holding a weapon, and refused commands to drop it.
When the suspect pointed the weapon at officer, Capt. Sack says the officers opened fire, killing the suspect. Capt. Says some of the officers who pursued the suspect on foot say they were fired at during the chase. Ballistics tests will be performed to confirm that the suspect had fired shots.
No officers were injured in the incident.
The suspect's name has not been released.
