KSDK – Who's the most talked about person on the internet?
Nope, not Edward Snowden, Kate Middleton or even the ubiquitous Tim Tebow – instead, it's Pope Francis.
That's according to the Global Language Monitor's yearly survey of the internet's most-used words, phrases and most talked about people.
Pope Francis beats out NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, Kate Middleton, Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Malala Yousafzai and President Barack Obama for the top spot.
The top word of 2013 was 404 – as in the near-universal numeric code for failure on the internet. That (unironically) was followed by fail (as in #fail) and hashtags themselves, as well as #Pontifex – the pope's Twitter handle.
Perhaps it's no surprise that toxic politics and the federal shutdown and deficit were the top phrases of the year. Also highly discussed were the Boston marathon bombings, global warming/climate change and the near-earth asteroid that hit Russia earlier this year.
This is a change from a year ago, when the top word was apocalypse, the top phrase was Gangnam style and the most-used name was Newtown.
