Beastie Boys battle over 'Girls' ad gone viral
The Beastie Boys say they support the message behind a viral ad that used their song Girls with video of enterprising girls engineering a Rube Goldberg-type machine. They just wish the company that made the commercial hadn't used their music without permission — and then sued them. When GoldieBlox created the ad for its line of "toys for future engineers," it used a parody version of Girls as the accompanying soundtrack. On Thursday, GoldieBlox filed suit against the group, hoping to have its version of the song declared "fair use." Today, the Beastie Boys posted an open letter to the company, saying they didn't permit the group's "music and/or name to be used in product ads."
