WOOD RIVER, Ill. (KSDK)- On Ferguson Avenue Thursday, the Wood River Fire Department showed up to show thanks.

Dr. Michael Harbison was being honored with a gift. A special American Flag.

"Operation let it wave gratefully acknowledges Dr. Michael S. Harbison, "read Rodney Cook from a proclamation.

Harbison is a Chiropractor. He's also a veteran.

He was in Alpha Company 269 and a part of the original invasion of Iraq in 2003.

"We spent 23 days in consecutive combat, "Harbison said.

Since coming home, he helped raise money for various veteran's organizations and given discounts to any veteran who walks into his business. That's why he was recognized by "Operation: Let it Wave".

"What we do is install American made American Flags on honorably discharged veteran's homes, " Cook said.

Normally, the flags are two and half by four feet but on Thursday they made an exception.

Instead of a flag that his customers could see passing his front door, Dr. Harbison got a flag the town could see for blocks. It's 17 feet high.

"We just want to thank him for his service and what he's done for our country, "explains Cook.

For a veteran who saw too many friends die in Iraq, it was almost too much.

"Overwhelming and very grateful, "said Harbison through tears.

Thanks to a brave soldier turned chiropractor and a grateful community, from now on-no matter where you go in Wood River you should be able to see, stars and stripes forever.
