FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. (KSDK) – Blizzard conditions hampered firefighters from responding to a blaze that broke out at a mobile home Sunday afternoon, leaving a 68-year-old woman dead.
Firefighters were dispatched at 4:35 p.m. to a fire at 313 Union Hill Road. Due to blowing snow and poor road conditions, the response was slower than usual, according to a news release.
The crew was slowed down again when, upon arrival, they learned that the mobile home was located on top of a hill with a gravel driveway. Because of the conditions, they were unable to drive a fire truck up to the home, and had to drag fire hoses to the site by hand.
Making matters worse, the first fire hydrant was frozen or broken, so additional lines were needed to reach the next hydrant.
When firefighters finally arrived, the home was entirely ablaze and the roof was collapsed. Georgette Warren, 68, was found dead inside.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, and is currently listed as accidental.
