KSDK – Earlier this week, the story was snow and record cold temperatures. That story became pipe bursts on Wednesday, with homes, businesses, schools and even a library reporting gushing water and a disruption to services that had already ground to a halt in wake of severe winter weather.
And it's not just pipes: water mains are breaking too.
Here's a look at pipe bursts around the area:
Shenandoah Valley Elementary School
A water main break at this school in the Parkway District is forcing a closure on Thursday and Friday. The break impacted seven classrooms for the 4th and 5th grades, as well as a special school district room and office.
This is the same school building that was damaged by tornado winds last April.
Indian Trails Branch Library
Officials hope to reopen this library next to Vinita Park in north St. Louis after a pipe burst Tuesday afternoon while it was open. Staff immediately closed the library, and began clean-up for what's being referred to as a "soggy mess."
A sprinkler pipe was what was responsible for the burst, which mainly damaged ceiling tiles and carpeting, leaving an inch of standing water in its wake. Anyone who normally goes to this blanch is urged to go to the Natural Bridge location instead.
Communications Center in Clayton
Clean-up efforts are underway at this administration building in Clayton after a pipe broke Tuesday, flooding the area. The communications centers' operations have been moved to a back-up facility in Chesterfield.
Richmond Heights Community Center
Rushing water forced the Heights community center to close Tuesday night after a broken pipe flooded certain areas. The trouble started upstairs in the library, before dripping down to the lower level, forcing the center to close and cancelling classes for the rest of the day. The Heights was back in business at about 10 a.m. Wednesday.
St. Charles County Old Courthouse
A pipe burst will close the St. Charles County old Courthouse/Executive Office Building Thursday. The leak affected three floors on the Jefferson Street side of the building, including the Video Production, County Counselor and County Council Offices. Water was cut off to the building and restoration crews were called in Wednesday night.
