MADISON COUNTY, Ill. (KSDK) – A 19-year-old Gillespie man is charged with stealing a car and drug possession after he got into an accident while reaching for a cigarette.

It happened at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Jan. 11. Police responded to a single-vehicle accident in Staunton, Ill. A registration check led deputies to discover that the car was stolen.

The driver – Layne Withers – told deputies that he took the vehicle from a family friend without permission, and got into the wreck when he leaned over to grab a cigarette. After he was arrested for stealing the car, a subsequent search revealed that he was in possession of approximately half a gram of heroin, two hydrocodone tablets and a package of syringes.

He was taken to a local hospital for a medical evaluation, before being taken to Madison County Jail, where he's currently being held on a $75,000 bond.

Withers was also issued citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane usage.
