WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. (KSDK) – The man fatally shot in a Florida movie theater after an argument about texting is originally from Alton, Ill., according to a report from the Belleville News Democrat.
Curtis Reeves, 71, is in custody after allegedly shooting and killing 43-year-old Chad Oulson during a showing of "Lone Survivor" in Wesley Chapel, Fla.
Reeves, who was in the theater with his wife, had asked Oulson to stop texting during the previews before the film begin. He then got up to tell theater management.
Additional words were exchanged, and Reeves told officers that Oulson struck him in the face with an "unknown object," leading him to pull a semiautomatic pistol from his pants pocket and shoot Oulson in the chest.
Witnesses, according to an arrest affidavit, did not report seeing any punches thrown during the confrontation.
Oulson's wife, who was also in the theater, allegedly put her hand on her husband's chest in an attempt to shield him, ultimately being struck by a bullet as well. She didn't sustain life-threatening injuries.
Oulson graduated from Brown County High School in 1989, according to a report from the Quincy Herald-Whig. He had been living in Land O'Lakes – about 20 miles outside of Tampa – when the shooting happened.
