GLEN CARBON, Ill. (KSDK) – Investigators have scoured the property where an elderly women was found frozen to death on Saturday, and say as of Tuesday night, they say theyh haven't found anything.
The search was prompted by a tip that was unrelated to the woman's death.
Police have searched 90 percent of the property, where 83-year-old Mary Kampwerth and her husband – who died in 2003 – had been living for quite some time.
Chief John Lakin said the tip came after Kampwerth's death, but wouldn't elaborate on the tip or the tipster.
Crews used backhoes and bulldozers to clear land for the search. Some of the focus centered around a pond on the property, but Lakin couldn't elaborate as to why.
"There possible was some criminal activity that occurred on the property in the past, so therefore acting on that information, we sent plenty of investigators and obviously there was a lot out there today," he said.
Police planned on continuing the search into the night, but plunging temperatures sent investigators home.
Lakin said the will return to the property on Wednesday to finish the search.
