EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (KSDK) – The widow of a southwestern Illinois man who was shot to death by a Madison County Deputy is suing the officer and the department.

It happened on State Route 140 last January. Neighbors called police after smelling lighter fluid in their home. Investigators say the deputy went to question Barry Cloninger. Instead, officials say he pointed a shotgun at the deputy, and refused to drop it.

Cloninger was shot and killed.

The Madison County Sheriff's department says it's standing by the deputies' action.
