COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (KSDK) – Scammers pretending to be Ameren employees are trying to dupe customers into paying bogus energy bills, according to a news release.

The scammers are sending fake emails that appear to be requests from Ameren asking recipients to take care of unpaid utility bills – as well as open virus-infected attachments. Other utilities throughout the country have reported similar scams.

Ameren is currently investigating the situation and trying to resolve the issue. Authorities recommend that customers not give personal or financial information to anyone who calls, sends an email or comes to their homes unannounced. Customers with concerns about their accounts should call Ameren Illinois at 800-755-5000.
