EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) - A federal lawsuit has been filed by an East St. Louis man against the city and a detective he accuses of beating him until he falsely confessed to a rape.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports Marlon Miller was arrested in connection with the robbery and rape of a 32-year-old East St. Louis woman. The attack occurred after the woman left a MetroLink train in East St. Louis on Jan. 29, 2013.

The lawsuit alleges former East St. Louis Detective Orlando Ward struck him several times out of the view of police recording devices. During the alleged beating, Miller confessed to attacking the woman.

DNA tests absolved Miller of the crime and led to the arrest of another suspect.

Miller seeks $50,000 from Ward and $100,000 from East St. Louis.
