ST. LOUIS (KSDK) – New fire department technology could improve response times and save lives.

The department is using a $1 million federal grant to pay for command scope technology. Firefighters will now have quick access to everything from floor plans to geographic maps to fire hydrant locations.

They'll use tablets on scene instead of site plans on paper.

Right now, firefighters are focused on putting what they call "target hazards" into the system.

Firefighters have already begun downloading data into their system, but it's going to be a five or six year project.
