ST. LOUIS (KSDK) – Though the turmoil in Ukraine is a world away, it hits far too close to home for some St. Louisans.

Olga Chyzh is from Ukraine and Elena Labzina is from Russia. The two are connected through Washington University – and their growing concern over what's happening in their homelands.

Labzina feels Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a mistake, but says many Russians support Vladimir Putin's decision.

Chyzh has family and friends in Ukraine who are suffering through this ordeal. She says the country's economy is crumbling, and the very necessities of life – simple things, like bread on grocery store shelves -- are disappearing.
