BALTIMORE (AP) - The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University has announced that Fred Bronstein, president of the St. Louis Symphony, is the institute's new dean.

Bronstein, who has chief executive of St. Louis Symphony since 2008, will start at the Peabody Institution in June.

The 57-year-old Bronstein reversing multi-year downturns in symphony attendance, ticket revenue and philanthropic support, the Peabody said in a news release. He also served as president of the Omaha Symphony and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

Bronstein will succeed Jeffrey Sharkey, who announced in October that he will return to the United Kingdom to become principal of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

The Peabody Institute is the nation's first music conservatory.
