The creek runs through the cemetery and travels east to the River des Peres. The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District says this does not spell an immediate threat to public health or safety, however, people are asked to avoid contact with MacKenzie Creek for the next two to three days.
Repairs begin Tuesday night, and a 7,000 foot section of MacKenzie Creek will be cleaned up over the next few days. The incident has been reported to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources as required by law.
Crews discovered the failed manhole at 2 p.m. during routine maintenance. The cause of failure is currently unknown. Signs have been posted in areas where the public can readily come into contact with the affected section of MacKenzie Creek.
