MARIES COUNTY, Mo. (KSDK) – A man held at gunpoint by a neighbor and landowner after he allegedly tried to steal from a house faces drug and burglary charges.
The Maries County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from a landowner claiming that 49-year-old Michael Gaither tried to steal from his home. The landowner and a neighbor held Gaither at gunpoint until authorities arrived.
Police found several bags of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, prescription pills and burglary tools in Gaither's possession. The sheriff's office recovered the stolen items from St. James.
Gaither, who is currently out on parole after numerous felony convictions, faces burglary, stealing, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of burglary tools charges.
"The suspect is very lucky he wasn't legally shot in this situation," Maries County Sheriff Chris Heitman said in a news release. "I am a big support of the second amendment, and with the victims help, this career criminal has been brought to justice."
