OAKVILLE, Mo. (KSDK) – Thousands of tires travel a stretch of Heintz road in South County daily.

But late Friday night, a trip turned tragic, near the intersection of Erb Road.

St Louis County say something caused a Mazda pickup truck to leave the road and slam into a tree. Two 18-year old males were inside the truck. The driver was rushed to the hospital. The passenger, Kenny Khammanivong, died.

Kenny's mom, Nnakkeo "Nikki" Khammanivong, says "I know the car was crushed, but I just don't know how it happened."

Investigators are still trying to piece together exactly what happened.

Nikki says she was proud of her son. He'd attended Oakville High School, but left a year early to get his GED. He'd been working and saving to buy his first car. She says he'd just passed his driver's test last week.

Nikki says Kenny, known to friends as "Kace," had just dealt with the death of his grandmother three weeks ago. She says the family is stunned

"It's just so much pain, and my heart is broken now," she said.
